The aim of root canal treatment is to get rid of the damaged, dying or dead nerve. To remove damaged pulp and the bacteria that are causing the infection. It is a skilled procedure that involves removing inflamed or dead nerves and blood vessels from the centre of your tooth. This is done by drilling a hole through the top of your tooth to the root canal and removing the dead tissues. The empty root canal is then cleaned, a temporary filling is put in and the tooth left to settle usually advised one week. The tooth is checked at a later visit and when all the infection has cleared, the tooth is permanently filled.
What if my existing root canal is failing?
Once the tooth has undergone the root canal procedure over time the tooth can become brittle. It is sometimes advised a plastic fibre post is drilled into the largest canal of the tooth and a strong core foundation built up. In such cases, it will also often be recommended that the tooth is protected with a crown, enabling you to preserve your natural tooth for as long as you can.
